Chapter 39 - The Face Beneath Holt

The transformation was not physical.
It was behavioral.
Commander Holt’s shoulders relaxed. His accent changed. His eyes moved across the terminal as though he had never seen it before.
“Where am I?” he asked.
The agents restrained him while Daniel searched the identity map.
Holt’s fingerprints belonged to Marcus Rane, a federal analyst who had died nine years earlier. Someone had placed Rane’s memories inside Holt, but the original personality had suddenly returned.
Eli watched with unsettling calmness.
“The broadcast woke him.”
“What broadcast?” Mara asked.
“The one Celeste sent when she unlocked the cars.”
Across the country, other replacements might be waking at that exact moment.
Daniel’s laptop began receiving emergency reports: judges abandoning courtrooms, executives forgetting their families, officials identifying themselves by dead people’s names.
Celeste had triggered chaos to stop the database from being erased.
But the Curator used the confusion to begin deleting Palinode’s facilities.
Blackwater Pier shook as an explosion collapsed the far tunnel. No one was injured, but the servers began overheating.
Daniel removed the main storage unit.
“We have the map, but not the files behind it.”
Eli touched Mara’s pendant.
“The files aren’t here.”
“Where are they?”
“In you.”
Mara stared at him.
Eli pointed toward a scar behind her ear.
“You didn’t design the archive to be opened.”
May you like
He looked toward the arriving helicopters.
“You designed yourself to become it.”
