Chapter 50 - The House Beyond the Water

The coordinates led to an empty stretch of coastline three days later.

Mara, Eli and Daniel stood above the cliffs while waves struck the rocks below. No building appeared on any map.

At sunset, a line of lights emerged across the water.

A structure rose from behind the fog: a vast house built on concrete pillars, connected to the shore by a narrow bridge.

Eli recognized it.

“The Last House.”

Mara had never heard the name, but her body remembered the place. She knew the number of steps to the entrance. She knew which window would be unlocked. She knew a piano waited inside the eastern room.

The front door opened before they reached it.

Elias stood in the doorway.

Celeste was beside him, holding the missing archive drive.

Neither looked frightened.

“We found the Curator,” Elias said.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where?”

Elias pointed toward Mara.

“It was never inside me.”

A piano began playing somewhere within the house.

Mara recognized the melody from her earliest childhood memory—the song sung by the woman in the yellow room.

Eli walked past Elias before anyone could stop him.

At the end of the hallway stood a woman wearing Mara’s face.

She appeared no older than twenty.

The woman smiled at Eli.

“You took longer than expected.”

Mara entered the house.

“Who are you?”

The young woman looked beyond her, toward hundreds of figures gathering silently on the bridge.

Every figure carried a silver pendant.

“My name changes each time you find me,” she said. “But you once called me the first memory.”

The lights across the Last House illuminated one room after another.

Inside every room stood another version of someone Mara knew.

The young woman held out her hand.

“The coexistence signal did not wake the world, Mara.”

Behind her, a hidden door opened.

“It woke the people waiting beneath it.”

Mara heard thousands of footsteps rising from below the house.

Then her pendant spoke in her own voice.

“Welcome home, Architect.”

Far out beyond the fog, a second house turned on its lights.
