Chapter 32 - The Photograph From Tuesday

Elias denied ever seeing the basement room.

Celeste believed him.

Mara did not.

The photograph had been taken on a Tuesday afternoon, according to the timestamp printed along its lower edge. Mara remembered that Tuesday clearly. She had attended a design meeting in Seattle, eaten dinner alone and spoken to Elias by video call before midnight.

She could prove every part of it.

Yet the woman in the photograph wore Mara’s coat, Mara’s pendant and the thin scar above Mara’s right eyebrow.

Eli opened one of his books and removed a small memory card.

“You left this too.”

Celeste inserted the card into Daniel Rowe’s encrypted laptop. A security recording appeared.

Mara watched herself enter Raven House at 2:14 p.m. that Tuesday.

She knelt before Eli and said, “They are going to remove today from me. When I return, I may believe Elias saved me.”

The recorded Mara glanced toward the camera.

“He didn’t.”

Elias backed away from the screen.

“This is manufactured.”

The video continued.

Mara placed both hands on Eli’s shoulders.

“The man beside me will have Elias’s face, voice and memories. But ask him what happened at Blackwater Pier.”

Celeste turned toward Elias.

“What happened at Blackwater Pier?”

May you like

Elias went completely still.

Then Eli whispered, “He doesn’t know because the real Elias never came home.”
