Chapter 40 - The Memory Inside Her

Daniel located a surgeon who had once worked for Amelia Voss.

Dr. Lenora Saye lived under federal protection in an isolated medical facility outside Portland. She agreed to meet them only after Mara repeated a phrase hidden in Amelia’s personnel file.

“A house remembers every person who leaves it.”

Lenora examined the scar behind Mara’s ear.

“There is no electronic device inside you,” she said. “The archive was encoded through memory association.”

Mara’s childhood homes, favorite songs, fears and recurring dreams were not random. Each represented part of an encrypted index.

To unlock the archive, Mara would have to recover the identity of Amelia Voss.

“And what happens to Mara Quinn?” Mara asked.

Lenora did not answer immediately.

“That depends on whether Mara was a disguise or a separate person.”

Elias refused to let the procedure continue.

“You could erase her.”

Lenora looked at him.

“That was always the risk.”

Mara chose to proceed.

During the first memory session, she saw Raven House before it had been built. Amelia stood beside Celeste and a younger Daniel Rowe.

Daniel appeared no older than thirty.

Yet the memory was dated forty-two years earlier.

Mara opened her eyes and found Daniel standing beside the door.

“You were there,” she said.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

Then he locked the room from the inside.
