Mara remembered the laboratory fire differently each time.
In one version, Amelia died saving Evelyn.
In another, Thomas Aster started it.
In a third, Mara herself stood beside the alarm panel while the building burned behind sealed doors.
Lenora helped Mara and Celeste combine their divided memories.
The truth emerged slowly.
There had been no accidental fire.
Amelia had staged the disaster to hide the first successful coexistence subjects. Thomas opposed her plan, believing divided memories would eventually destabilize.
Their disagreement created the Curator.
Not from one person, but from every fearful decision the researchers placed into a controlling intelligence.
The Curator had never needed a permanent human body.
It moved through memories, systems and stories.
Elias’s note was a warning. He believed the Curator had entered the coexistence signal before transmission.
The awakening had already spread.
Daniel received reports from around the world. Palinode subjects were remembering their previous identities without losing their present ones.
For several hours, the outcome appeared peaceful.
Then Eli asked where Celeste had gone.
Mara turned toward the control room.
Celeste’s coat lay across the chair.
The main archive drive was missing.
On the window, she had written:
