Chapter 35 - The Name She Buried
Mara’s mother had once told her that Amelia Voss died before Mara was born.
Daniel found the death certificate within minutes. Amelia Voss had supposedly died in a laboratory fire twenty-eight years earlier.
The photograph in the file was unmistakably Mara.
Celeste searched the remaining cabinets and found evaluations signed by Amelia. The reports described methods for separating memories from emotional responses and placing them inside “compatible cognitive structures.”
Elias read one line twice.
“The architect must never remember building the house.”
Mara felt the room tilt around her.
Eli guided her toward a chair.
“You always sit here when it begins.”
“When what begins?”
“The remembering.”
He pressed a hidden switch beneath the table.
A recording appeared on the wall.
A younger version of Mara stood inside the laboratory wearing a white coat. Her expression was colder than the woman watching her.
“My name is Amelia Voss,” the recording said. “Mara Quinn is a protected identity created to survive me.”
The recorded woman explained that Project Palinode had been designed to preserve memories after death. But the research was stolen and used to manufacture obedient replacements.
“If Mara is watching this,” Amelia continued, “then my safeguards have failed.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“The greatest threat is not the organization.”
The image distorted.
“The greatest threat is Celeste.”
Mara turned.
