Chapter 10 - Unmasked in the ER|

The subtle threat hung heavily in the air.

"My treatment is already completely covered," I said softly, looking up at his blurry silhouette.

Preston laughed dryly. "Covered by whom? Your parents?"

"Yes."

He shook his head with arrogant pity. "Amelia, your parents are retired public school teachers living off small pensions. They can't afford a real legal battle against us."

Gerard adjusted his silk tie impatiently. "Mrs. Caldwell, delaying this signature may force my clients to withdraw all financial support immediately."

I turned my head toward Preston. "Did you know your mother was going to spray me?"

"No," he lied without hesitation.

"Did you pin my arms to my side?"

"I was attempting to manage a hysterical, unstable situation!"

"Why did you leave me alone in the emergency room, Preston?"

"Because you were turning a silly household accident into an absurd criminal accusation!" he barked.

I paused, holding my breath. "Did you ever actually love me?"

The unexpected question caught him entirely off guard. Preston froze, his lips parting slightly, but no words came out. That brief, agonizing silence told me more than every stolen email we had recovered.

"I married you, didn't I?" he answered defensively.

"That wasn't my question."

Before Preston could respond, the wooden door opened wide.

My mother stepped out from the adjoining consultation room, wearing a sharply tailored charcoal suit. Her graying hair was pinned back neatly, and her eyes carried the fierce, deadly calm of a seasoned prosecutor closing in on a guilty verdict. Beside her walked Detective Lena Ortiz of the police department, along with the chief of hospital security.

Preston frowned in confusion. "Margaret? Why on earth are you dressed like a lawyer?"

My mother reached into her jacket pocket, pulled out a heavy leather wallet, and flipped it open, placing her retired Senior Federal Prosecutor credentials directly onto the glass tray table. The heavy gold shield struck the surface with a loud, terrifying clack.

"Because unlike Mr. Mills," Mother said, her voice dropping an octave into pure ice, "I actually understand that coercing an injured, heavily medicated patient into signing a fraudulent statement constitutes felony witness intimidation."

Gerard Mills immediately snatched his hands back from the documents as if the paper had caught fire.

Detective Ortiz stepped forward smoothly, clicking her handcuffs off her belt. "Mr. Caldwell, I need you to keep your hands where I can see them and step out into the hallway."

Preston’s face drained of all color. He spun toward my bed in total panic. "Amelia! Tell them it was an accident! Tell them!"

I reached up and slowly removed the dark, protective medical goggles shielding my swollen face. My eyelids were raw, red, and terribly inflamed, but my gaze was steady.

"You told me to stop reacting, Preston," I said quietly.

His breath hitched. "Amelia, please—"

"So I stopped," I said, turning away. "Now, the law will react."

An hour later, Veronica Caldwell was formally arrested in the main dining room of her exclusive country club, surrounded by her wealthy social peers. She loudly demanded a private rear exit so nobody would see her in handcuffs. The arresting officers flatly refused.

Preston was cuffed in the hospital parking garage after detectives reviewed the doorbell footage and matched it to his incriminating text messages. By midnight, mother and son occupied adjacent holding cells at the precinct.
