Chapter 12 - The Lady of the Boardroom|

A suffocating, absolute silence fell over the massive boardroom.

Veronica slowly lowered her black sunglasses, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror as she stared at my suit, then at my mother, and finally at me.

"But... but you drove that awful, rusty old car," Veronica stammered, her voice cracking for the first time in her life. "You worked in a dusty basement!"

I leaned forward slightly, resting my elbows on the polished table. "I loved my job at the museum, Veronica. And my car ran perfectly fine."

Preston’s hands began to shake uncontrollably. "You... you told me your parents were retired teachers!"

My mother sat down calmly beside me, opening a notepad. "My husband and I taught law and finance at the university level early in our careers, Preston. We never lied. You simply never bothered to ask a single follow-up question because you were too busy calculating how much money you could extract from us."

Conrad Caldwell ignored his son, frantically tearing open the red loan file. As his eyes scanned the legal documents inside, the color slowly drained from his face until he looked completely ash-gray.

Grant Meridian Partners was officially calling in every single loan default that Caldwell Heritage Resorts had committed over the past two years. The multi-million-dollar credit refinancing package was permanently canceled. Personal financial guarantees attached to Conrad and Veronica's luxury estates were being executed immediately. A court-appointed federal receiver would take operational control of all twelve Caldwell resort properties by six o'clock that evening.

"This is illegal retaliation!" Conrad roared, slamming his palms onto the table. "You are destroying a billion-dollar company over a private family squabble!"

My father looked down at him with cold pity. "The financial defaults existed long before your wife assaulted my daughter, Conrad. I delayed the foreclosure proceedings purely because Amelia believed your son was a decent man."

"You can't do this to us!" Preston shouted, jumping out of his chair. "Amelia, look at me! You are my wife! We swore vows!"

I reached into my suit pocket, pulled out the gold wedding band, and tossed it across the polished mahogany table. It tumbled forward, striking the center of his papers with a loud ring.

"My attorneys filed for an expedited annulment this morning based on gross fraudulent inducement," I said, my voice steady and iron-strong. "A mistake is forgetting an anniversary, Preston. Your mother intentionally aimed a chemical weapon at my face, and you physically pinned me down so she could burn me. Then you lied to the police, abandoned me, and tried to force me to sign away my legal rights while I was blind."
