Chapter 23 - The Sterling Connection

|

The annual Philadelphia Heritage Gala was an unavoidable obligation for my family. Held in the grand ballroom of a historic downtown hotel, it was a sea of designer gowns, tuxedoes, and forced smiles. Before the Caldwell nightmare, I would have hidden in a corner, terrified of being noticed solely for my trust fund. Tonight, I stood tall in an emerald green gown, my glasses framing my face like a shield of intellect and confidence.

My father approached with two flutes of sparkling water, handing one to me.

"You look deep in thought, Amelia," he said, his eyes scanning the crowd protectively.

"Just observing the room, Dad," I smiled reassuringly. "It’s interesting to see the faces behind the names in the city's history."

"Speaking of history," a smooth, baritone voice interrupted.

We turned to see Arthur Sterling approaching. He was a tall man in his late fifties, with silver hair and eyes that held the cold, calculating glint of a shark. He projected an aura of absolute authority, accustomed to rooms bowing to his presence.

"Mr. Grant. Amelia," Arthur said, offering a polite but rigid smile. "I heard congratulations are in order for your promotion to Head Archivist. A charming little hobby you've cultivated."

"It’s not a hobby, Mr. Sterling," I replied evenly, ignoring his condescension. "It’s a dedication to preserving the truth of our city's past. The good and the bad."

Arthur’s smile tightened just a fraction. He stepped slightly closer, invading my personal space just enough to establish dominance.

"I was recently informed that your museum acquired a box of documents from an old financial estate," Arthur said, dropping his voice so only my father and I could hear. "Including a certain black ledger. My family is highly interested in reclaiming our private historical artifacts. We are willing to make a very generous donation to your museum in exchange for its immediate return."

"The museum doesn't sell its archives, Arthur," my father interjected, his tone suddenly frosty as he stepped slightly in front of me.

"I wasn't asking you, Richard," Arthur replied, his eyes fixed entirely on me. "Amelia understands the importance of protecting a family's legacy. Especially given the... public difficulties she has faced in the past. It would be a shame for things to become complicated for her again."

I met his cold gaze without blinking, my heart beating a steady, fearless rhythm.

"The ledger is currently undergoing authentication, Mr. Sterling," I said, my voice ringing with clarity. "Once it is processed, it will be available for public viewing. If your family’s legacy is something to be proud of, you have absolutely nothing to worry about."

Arthur stared at me for a long moment, the polite mask slipping to reveal naked hostility.

"Enjoy the gala, Amelia," he whispered. "While you still can."
