Chapter 25 - Elena's Discovery

|
The morning after the break-in, I sat in the Grant-Morris Foundation offices, clutching a cup of hot tea while Marcus briefed my parents and Elena. The museum was crawling with police, but the intruder had escaped, leaving behind no physical evidence.
"They bypassed a state-of-the-art security system," Marcus explained, his expression grim. "Whoever Arthur Sterling hired, they were absolute professionals. They were specifically targeting Amelia's office."
My mother squeezed my hand, her face pale with worry. "Amelia, darling, you need to step away from this. The museum can hand the ledger over to the police."
"The police won't do anything with a 140-year-old book, Mom," I said gently. "It’s a historical document, not modern evidence. But Arthur Sterling knows that if the public sees it, the PR fallout for his empire will be catastrophic."
Elena, who had been quietly typing on her laptop at the end of the table, suddenly stopped. She looked up, her eyes wide with shock.
"Amelia, you need to see this," Elena said, turning her screen toward us.
I leaned forward, slipping my reading glasses on. Displayed on the screen was the intake form of one of the three new women we had accepted into our foundation's program yesterday. Her name was Sarah Jenkins.
"Sarah is an executive assistant who was recently fired from her job," Elena explained, her voice tight. "She came to us because she is being crushed by a predatory non-disclosure agreement and aggressive financial intimidation."
"Where did she work?" my father asked, leaning over my shoulder.
"Sterling Enterprises," Elena said, highlighting the company name. "Sarah claims she witnessed massive, systemic financial fraud regarding their real estate acquisitions. When she tried to report it to human resources, Arthur Sterling personally cornered her, forced her to sign an NDA under threat of ruining her family financially, and seized all her assets."
I stared at the screen, the breath knocked out of me.
"It’s the exact same blueprint," I whispered, the realization hitting me with the force of a physical blow. "Asset secured. Silence purchased."
"Arthur Sterling isn't just trying to hide his family's history," Elena said, slamming her laptop shut. "He’s actively trying to hide his present. He is using the exact same coercive tactics his ancestors used in that ledger. If Sarah speaks out, he’s finished."

I looked at my parents, then at Elena. The historical archive and our modern foundation had just collided perfectly.
"We need to bring Sarah into a secure safe house immediately," I declared, standing up. "Arthur Sterling thought he could silence the past by breaking into my museum. We are going to answer him by destroying his future."
