Chapter 30 - The Press Conference

The grand foyer of the Philadelphia Historical Museum was packed with reporters, local politicians, and high-society figures. The massive marble columns echoed with the hum of anticipation. I stood behind a polished podium, flanked by Julian on my right and Elena on my left.
I adjusted my glasses, looking out over the sea of flashing cameras. I was no longer the fragile, broken heiress hiding behind dark goggles. I was in complete command of the room.
"Good morning, everyone," I began, my voice ringing clear and authoritative through the microphone. "Thank you for coming today. The Philadelphia Historical Museum is proud to announce our upcoming, unprecedented exhibition: Shadows of Industry: The Obsidian Ledger."
A murmur rippled through the press corps.
"For over a century, the history of our great city's rapid expansion has been told through the lens of powerful men and massive corporations," I continued, projecting an image of the black ledger onto the screen behind me. "But history is rarely a single narrative. This newly discovered, authenticated ledger details the systemic, predatory financial coercion of vulnerable women in the 1880s, orchestrated by the founding fathers of some of our city's most prominent current conglomerates."
A reporter in the front row immediately raised his hand. "Ms. Grant! Are you specifically referring to the Sterling family? Rumors are circulating that the ledger contains their original founding documents."
I offered a calm, measured smile. "The exhibition will speak for itself. We believe that acknowledging the dark truths of our past is the only way to ensure ethical corporate behavior in our present."
Another reporter shouted, "Arthur Sterling's office released a statement this morning calling your exhibition a 'baseless, politically motivated slander campaign.' How do you respond?"
"I respond by inviting Mr. Sterling to view the primary source documents himself," I answered smoothly, fully aware of the trap I was setting. "Furthermore, the Grant-Morris Foundation will be hosting a companion seminar alongside the exhibition, discussing how historical tactics of silencing victims have evolved into the predatory Non-Disclosure Agreements used by corrupt corporations today."
The cameras flashed blindingly. I had explicitly linked his family's historical crimes directly to the very foundation fighting his current crimes.
As I stepped away from the podium, Julian leaned in and whispered, "That was absolutely brilliant, Amelia. You just backed a billionaire into a public corner."

"He’s going to strike back," Elena warned quietly as we walked toward my office. "He has no choice now."
"I know," I said, a fierce, protective fire burning in my chest. "And we are completely ready for him."
