Chapter 26 - The Safe House

|

The Grant-Morris Foundation maintained three highly secure, undisclosed safe houses across the city for clients facing imminent danger. We moved Sarah Jenkins into the primary location—a fortified brownstone in a quiet neighborhood, completely off the grid.

Sarah was a woman in her early thirties, brilliant but visibly exhausted. When Elena and I arrived with groceries and secure laptops, Sarah was sitting on the edge of the sofa, staring blankly at the wall.

"Sarah," I said softly, setting the bags down. "You are completely safe here. Marcus and his team have the perimeter locked down. Sterling cannot reach you."

Sarah looked up, her eyes red-rimmed. "You don't understand how powerful Arthur is, Amelia. He doesn't just fire people. He ruins them. He told me if I breached the NDA, he would tie me up in litigation until I was bankrupt, and then he would go after my parents' retirement accounts. He has judges in his pocket."

Elena sat beside her, opening a legal pad. "We have dealt with powerful, abusive men before, Sarah. Their NDAs are designed to inspire terror, but they are fundamentally illegal when used to cover up a felony. If we can prove the financial fraud you witnessed, that NDA is absolutely worthless."

"But I have no proof!" Sarah cried, burying her face in her hands. "He wiped my hard drive. He took my company phone. I have nothing but my word against a billionaire."

I walked over and sat on the coffee table directly in front of her. I reached out and gently pulled her hands away from her face.

"Sarah, look at me," I said, ensuring she made eye contact. I took off my glasses, letting her clearly see the faint, surgical scars that traced the edges of my corneas.

"A year ago, a powerful family told me that my word meant nothing," I told her, my voice unwavering. "They told me they owned the truth. They tried to physically blind me to keep me from fighting back. But they failed. Because true power isn't about money, Sarah. It’s about standing together."

Sarah stared at my eyes, the panic in her expression slowly shifting into awe.

"We have resources he doesn't know about," I continued, thinking of the Obsidian Ledger hidden in the museum vault. "We are going to map his entire operation, past and present. You just have to be brave enough to tell us exactly what you saw."

Sarah took a deep, shuddering breath, her posture finally straightening.

"Okay," she whispered, a fierce spark of defiance igniting in her eyes. "I'll tell you everything."
