Chapter 15 - The Unspoken Mirror|

As the weeks stretched on, my therapy sessions forced me to look deeper into the mirror.

"Amelia," Dr. Cole asked during our sixth session, "when Preston first pressured you to get married quickly, did you have doubts?"

I looked away, tracing the edge of my chair. "Yes. Deep down, I felt like he was rushing things. But every time I hesitated, he made me feel guilty. He said I was afraid of real commitment."

"And why didn't you listen to your inner voice?"

"Because I thought my doubts were just paranoia," I admitted, my voice trembling. "When you grow up with immense wealth, you're taught from a young age that people always have hidden motives. I thought I was being cynical. I wanted so badly to be normal."

"And what does 'normal' mean to you now?"

"Normal means safety," I said firmly. "It means respect. It means being with people who don't expect you to diminish yourself so they can feel big."

Dr. Cole smiled softly. "You didn't cause Preston's evil actions, Amelia. His mother's cruelty and his financial greed were entirely their own choice. But realizing why you tolerated his early red flags is the key to ensuring you are never victimized again."

Meanwhile, the legal proceedings against the Caldwell family deepened. During the formal discovery process for our annulment, my mother's legal team uncovered even more disturbing evidence regarding Preston's past.

It turned out I wasn't the first woman he had systematically targeted and emotionally manipulated.

Four months after the chemical attack, a young woman named Elena Morris reached out to my father's firm, requesting a private meeting with me. She was thirty-four years old, a former high-level hospitality manager who had worked for Caldwell Heritage Resorts five years earlier.

When Elena entered the conference room at my mother's law office, she looked pale and nervous. She held a thick paper folder tightly against her chest.

"Thank you for meeting me, Amelia," Elena said softly, her voice filled with emotion. "I... I owe you an apology that I should have given years ago."
