Chapter 7 - The Unseen Eye|

"What would you like to reply?" Mother asked, holding the tablet steady in front of me.
"I want to tell him he's a pathetic coward," I said bitterly.
"That would be emotionally satisfying, but strategically useless," Mother advised calmly. "Let us give him an opportunity to dig his own grave."
I dictated a carefully constructed response: I am so confused, Preston. Why did Veronica spray that harsh cleaner into my eyes? And why did you hold my arms so I couldn't protect my face?
Preston’s reply came back in less than sixty seconds:
Because you humiliated her in her own home! You should be grateful that people of our social standing even allowed you into this family. Stop pretending she intended serious harm. You're fine.
Mother immediately saved the text chain in three separate digital formats, documenting the exact device ID, phone number, and timestamp.
Veronica, arrogance overflowing, proved even less cautious than her son. Before eleven o'clock that morning, she left a icy voicemail directly on my phone.
"Amelia, our family attorney will be delivering a document for you to sign," Veronica’s shrill voice rang out through the quiet hospital room. "It confirms that yesterday's incident was entirely the result of your own clumsiness. You will sign it immediately. Preston’s career and the Caldwell name will not be ruined simply because your eyes are unusually delicate. You entered this marriage with nothing, girl. Remember that before you decide how difficult you wish to make your departure."
When the recording finished playing, my father turned away from the window.
"They truly believe they are threatening a helpless, low-income archivist who can't afford legal representation," Father noted, his voice dangerously low.
"That is precisely what they believe," Mother replied coldly.
By noon, my father’s private security team had successfully accessed my cloud storage and retrieved the doorbell footage from the Caldwell foyer. The wide-angle lens captured almost the entire room.
The video was agonizingly clear: it showed Veronica shaking the industrial bottle, twisting the nozzle from a gentle mist to a direct, high-pressure stream, and aiming it straight at my eyes. It showed Preston stepping swiftly behind me, grabbing both of my wrists, and dragging my arms down while bracing his legs. It captured my horrified screams, followed immediately by Preston’s dismissive voice: Stop being dramatic.
Father watched the clip once through, his face unreadable, before snapping the laptop closed.
"Eighteen months ago," Father said quietly, "Grant Meridian Partners approved emergency bridge financing for Caldwell Heritage Resorts. Their hotel empire was failing, violating multiple debt covenants. I delayed foreclosure and receivership only because you told me you loved Preston."

My breath caught in my throat. "What does my marriage have to do with their corporate debt?"
Mother looked at me softly. "My dear... it has everything to do with it."
