Chapter 29 - An Unexpected Visit

|

Two days before our planned press conference, I was sitting in my father’s private study at the Grant estate, reviewing the promotional materials for the upcoming exhibition. The heavy oak doors suddenly opened, and my father walked in, looking remarkably tense.

"Amelia," my father said, his voice unusually tight. "We have an unexpected guest in the parlor. Arthur Sterling just arrived unannounced. He requested a private audience with me."

I stood up immediately, my heart pounding. "He’s here? In our house?"

"Yes," my father nodded, his jaw set in a hard line. "I want you to stay in here and listen through the cracked door. I want you to hear exactly how this family deals with threats."

I stepped into the shadows near the slightly ajar double doors leading to the grand parlor.

Arthur Sterling stood near the fireplace, holding a crystal glass of bourbon my father had offered him. He looked every bit the arrogant patrician, entirely unaware of the storm brewing against him.

"Richard," Arthur began, his voice dripping with false camaraderie. "I appreciate you taking the time. I'll get straight to the point. I understand your daughter is planning a rather... provocative historical exhibition at her museum."

"Amelia is an exceptional Head Archivist," my father replied smoothly, taking a seat opposite Arthur. "Her exhibitions are always highly educational."

"Let’s drop the pleasantries," Arthur sneered, setting his glass down hard. "That ledger she possesses is a fabricated piece of trash designed to slander my family. I am offering you a backdoor deal, Richard. Sell me the ledger, shut down this ridiculous feminist foundation she runs, and I will ensure that Sterling Enterprises partners exclusively with Grant Holdings on the new waterfront development. It’s a billion-dollar handshake."

I held my breath in the shadows, waiting for my father's response.

My father did not hesitate for a single second. He stood up, towering over Arthur.

"Arthur, you seem to have fundamentally misunderstood who I am, and more importantly, who my daughter is," my father said, his voice a low, lethal rumble. "There is not enough money on this earth to make me betray her. Amelia survived hell to build her foundation. If you ever threaten her, or her work, again, I will personally spend my last dying breath ensuring your entire empire burns to the ground."

Arthur’s face contorted in absolute fury. He snatched his coat from the chair.

"You will deeply regret this, Richard," Arthur hissed venomously. "Both of you."

"Get out of my house," my father commanded, pointing toward the door.

As Arthur stormed out, my father turned and looked toward the cracked door where I was hiding. He offered me a small, fiercely proud smile. The battle lines were officially drawn.
