Chapter 8 - The Paperwork of Betrayal|

While I slept under the heavy influence of pain medication, my mother and a senior forensic accountant reviewed the confidential financial disclosures that Caldwell Heritage Resorts had submitted during their loan application.

What they discovered was sickening.

Preston’s name appeared repeatedly in internal corporate strategy logs. Exactly three weeks before he proposed to me on a candlelit terrace, he had used his executive company computer to run extensive background searches on my father's full name, the Grant Family Trust, and the hidden private assets connected to Grant Meridian Partners.

The discovery didn't just reveal a gold-digger; it proved a calculated, predatory plot.

Investigators soon uncovered a damning thread of internal emails between Preston and his mother.

She uses the name Rose Grant at the museum, Preston had written to Veronica months ago, but her full legal name is Amelia Margaret Grant. William Grant is almost certainly her father. If my search is correct, she is intentionally living below her means. She is an heiress.

Veronica’s response was chilling:

Do not confront her. Let her believe you fall in love with her modest little disguise. Once she is emotionally attached to you and wears your ring, her wealthy father will never allow the Caldwell family name to collapse into bankruptcy.

Another email exchange occurred a few weeks later:

Preston: She is refusing to discuss a lavish wedding. She wants a small gathering.

Veronica: Then give her the small wedding, you idiot! Pride matters far less than her signature on that marriage license.

Sitting on my hospital bed, my gold wedding band felt suddenly like a hot iron burning into my flesh.

Preston had become exceptionally attentive and romantic right after the Caldwell hotel chain received its final notice of debt default. He had rushed our engagement, claiming he couldn't bear to live another day without me. When I had suggested waiting a year to plan things out, he lied, saying his grandmother’s failing health meant we needed to marry immediately so she could witness it.

His grandmother had spent the entire wedding reception dancing and drinking champagne.

"What did he expect me to sign, Mother?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Mother opened a red folder. "The prenuptial agreement he gave you was standard, but a linked estate draft included a hidden clause allowing either spouse to legally represent the other in business matters during times of 'temporary medical incapacity.'"

"I refused that clause!" I remembered instantly. "My lawyer took it out!"

"Yes," Mother said softly. "And that is why they became desperate."
