I motioned for Elena to sit down across from me, taking note of the anxiety etched into her features.
"You don't owe me an apology, Elena," I said gently. "What happened?"
Elena took a deep, shuddering breath. "I dated Preston for nearly three years while working at the flagship hotel. When I became pregnant, he completely transformed. He panicked, screaming that a baby would ruin his corporate image and ruin his standing with his mother."
My stomach churned as I listened. "What did he do?"
"He isolated me," Elena sobbed quietly. "He cut me off from my friends, controlled my work schedule, and insisted I wasn't ready to be a mother. Under the extreme emotional stress, I... I had a miscarriage."
I reached across the table and gently held her hand. "I am so sorry, Elena."
"After the miscarriage," Elena continued, wiping tears from her face, "Veronica called me into her office. She told me flatly that a girl from an ordinary background like mine lacked the social grace required to ever marry into the Caldwell family. They fired me from my management job, and when I threatened to sue, they forced me to sign an aggressive non-disclosure agreement."
"How did they force you?" my mother asked from the head of the table.
"Veronica threatened to destroy my career," Elena explained. "She told me she would call every major hotel group in the country and label me a thief and an unstable liar. I was young, terrified, and deeply in debt. So I signed the NDA and took a small severance payment."
Elena opened her folder, revealing a treasure trove of saved text messages, emails, and internal corporate memos detailing how Preston and Veronica had systematically harassed her.

"When I saw the news about what they did to your eyes," Elena said, her voice turning fierce, "I realized my silence had allowed them to keep hurting women. Preston dated me, broke me, and then set his sights on you because he thought you were another helpless victim."
