Chapter 13 - Collapse of an Empire|

Preston panicked, pointing a trembling finger at my parents. "They are manipulating you, Amelia! They are controlling your mind!"
"No," I replied sharply. "Control was holding my arms while your mother sprayed disinfectant into my eyes."
Mother slid a second, dark blue folder across the table toward Conrad. "While preparing the foreclosure notice, our forensic auditors reviewed the Caldwell company server logs under the mandatory terms of our loan agreement. We uncovered something fascinating."
The printed emails inside detailed systematic corporate fraud. For months, Preston and Conrad had been illegally diverting millions of dollars from hotel renovation accounts to cover Preston's massive offshore gambling debts, luxury lifestyle, and failed stock investments.
Conrad's eyes widened in horror as he read one of Preston’s private messages out loud to the room: Once Amelia wears the ring, she becomes legally tied to our corporate debt. If she runs to her father, the old man will pay off every penny to protect his daughter's reputation.
Conrad’s voice broke on the last word. He slowly turned his head to glare at his son with pure hatred.
Veronica spun around, slapping Preston hard across the arm. "You idiot! You told me those emails were completely encrypted and deleted!"
Preston buried his face in his hands, slumping into his chair.
Before anyone else could speak, the heavy boardroom doors opened a second time. Detective Ortiz entered the room, accompanied by two federal agents in dark suits.
"Preston Caldwell?" the lead federal agent called out loudly.
Preston looked up, his eyes bloodshot and terrified.
"You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, conspiracy, and witness intimidation," the agent declared, stepping forward and pulling Preston out of his chair.
As the steel handcuffs clicked around Preston's wrists, Conrad collapsed heavily back into his seat, breathing shallowly. Veronica began to sob hysterically, watching her son being dragged toward the door.
For the very first time, her grief appeared real. Not because she cared about the horrible pain she had inflicted on my eyes—but because actual, terrifying consequences had finally entered her sheltered world, wearing someone else’s absolute authority.
Veronica turned her tear-streaked face toward me, her eyes filled with rage. "You planned this whole trap! You set us up!"
May you like
I stood up slowly, leaning over the table. "No, Veronica. You planned the cruelty. You simply assumed I was too poor, too weak, and too frightened to ever make you pay for it."
I turned my back on them and walked out of the room, leaving the Caldwell empire to crumble into dust behind me.
